about

Continuing on from the excellent IDM-fest that was ‘In the Mouth of the Sindrome’, comes Blakbody’s new EP ‘Atmos’. After all those wonderfully fractured and twisted beats New Jersey’s Blakbody takes a slightly gentler turn this time around and we hear a more mellow and evolved side to his sound. While referencing genres such as ambient, idm and house, the overall sound is unmistakeable, underpinned by the forbidding sense of normalities being fractured over and over again. Blakbody moves deftly from the open expansiveness of the lush Ember, the otherworldly vocals and glitchy rhythmics of Nyx and the – dare we say? – uplifting anthem Totem, to the final awkwardness of Coaxial, a track that sounds like the infinite divisions of a malfunctioning human mind. After the success of the ITMOTS partnership, C Mantle has again entered the fray with a remix of Coaxial. This track delves into the further reaches of hip-hop (hinted at on ITMOTS), exploring genre beat patterns and the tension between repetition and complexity. This EP is a fascinating work from two artists really pushing new forms and sounds.
